How can YOU join this project, have fun, be creative, meet great people, and save the planet? There are several options....

1. Sew for the Climate!

Join local Energy Independent Caroline Committee member Lucy Gagliardo at an upcoming sewing bee, as the community comes together to make 1000 re-usable cloth bags! The bags are being filled with LED light bulbs and literature, and given to local residents during the Brighten Up Caroline project.

It turns out that choosing a bag from all the bright colors and diverse patterns is nearly everyone's favorite part of this project! Bags have already been spotted carrying groceries and trick-or-treat candy.

Peggy Dunlop has donated a LOT of fabric, others are donating or lending sewing machines… you just need to donate your time and enthusiasm. If you can bring a mat cutter, rulers, rotary cutters, scissors, thread, pins… and possibly also a sewing machine, that is helpful!

Lucy is reserving the Old Fire Hall South Room at the Brooktondale Community Center at regular intervals, for sewing bees. Emily has been doing the same thing at the Brookton's Market (see "residents" page) where she is handing out light bulbs as well. Sewing bees will stop for the holidays and start up again in January. Anyone who wants to sew on their own, at home, is welcome to pick up supplies from Lucy.

Thanks for your help in making Brighten Up Caroline a success and lowering our community’s climate impact!

2. Teamwork!

Join the Energy Independent Caroline committee, and gravitate toward one of the sub-committees. We have a database team (working on accurate lists of all our residents and where they live), a literature team (working to assemble our pamphlet of energy tips), a publicity team (designing a logo and flyers for the program), and an event team (figuring out which events we can attend with a table and information and bags of bulbs) -- in addition to the sewing team, of course.

3. On the door for the planet!

Come canvass with us during our canvass days. We will have bags and maps and refreshments, and we'll divide people up into teams, and see how far we can get! We can't leave bags of bulbs at houses where no one is home, so the main challenge will be finding a lot of people at home. Luckily, we can leave a card and suggest to people that they come to a central location to pick up their bag, if they don't want to wait until the next time we are able to send someone to their house.
